Snake and Ladder is one of the oldest board games in the world – its roots trace back to ancient India, where it was originally called Moksha Patam and used to teach lessons about karma. The version on Pookigame keeps the simple race-to-the-top mechanic that has entertained children and families for centuries: roll the dice, move your token, climb ladders to skip ahead, and slide down snakes when luck turns against you.

What makes Snake and Ladder such an enduring game is the way it perfectly balances skill and luck. Unlike chess or carrom, you cannot really outplay your opponent – every roll is random. But the moment of suspense when your token is two squares from a snake's head, and the next person rolls just the right number to send you tumbling, is exactly the kind of memorable game moment that makes board games timeless.

How to Play Snake and Ladder

Pick your mode – "2 Player" for pass-and-play with a friend, or "Computer" to play solo against the AI. On your turn, click the dice to roll a number from 1 to 6, and your token moves that many squares forward. Land on a ladder's base and you instantly climb to its top. Land on a snake's head and you slide down to its tail. Roll a 6 and you get an extra turn. The first player to reach the final square wins.

Tips for Snake and Ladder

  • There is no real strategy for the dice – it is random – but psychology still helps. Players who panic about snakes often misread the board; stay calm and you will make fewer counting errors.

  • Watch the snakes near the end of the board. Most boards have a "killer snake" in the 90s that drops you back to the 30s or 40s – it is the most heartbreaking square in the game.

  • In 2-player mode, the player who goes second has a slight statistical advantage if the game runs long, because they get one more turn at every "near the finish" moment.

  • On a board with many ladders, ladders are usually clustered in the middle rows. Take your time rolling there and enjoy the climb.
