Chess is the oldest strategy game still played seriously today, with origins traceable to 6th-century India as Chaturanga. Master Chess on Pookigame brings the standard 8×8 board game to your browser with both single-player mode against the AI and pass-and-play multiplayer for two players on the same device. You can pick your difficulty level for the AI, so the game scales from a complete beginner's first match up to a serious puzzle for an experienced player.

What makes a chess game worth playing in 2024 – when there are dozens of online options – is the user interface. Master Chess on Pookigame is built for quick games: highlights for legal moves on hover, automatic detection of check and checkmate, and clean board piece designs that read well at any size. It is the kind of chess engine that does not get in the way of the game.

How to Play Master Chess

Click (or tap) a piece to select it. The board highlights all legal moves for that piece in green. Click a highlighted square to move there. Captures, castling, en passant and pawn promotion are all handled automatically – just complete the move and the engine takes care of the rules. Check is announced on screen; checkmate ends the game.

Tips for Beating the Master Chess AI

  • Control the centre. The four central squares (d4, d5, e4, e5) are the most powerful real estate on the board – pieces there reach more squares.

  • Develop knights and bishops before the queen. Bringing the queen out early just lets the AI chase it with pieces that develop for free.

  • Castle within the first 10 moves. Your king behind a wall of pawns is dramatically safer than your king in the centre.

  • Look for two-move tactics: pins (where a piece cannot move because of a more valuable piece behind it) and forks (one piece attacking two enemy pieces). Most beginner wins come from these.
